When it comes to outdoor spaces, there’s something special about building a structure that breaks the mold. This was precisely the vision behind the Minimal Gazebo, a stunning hip roof vinyl gazebo like no other, designed for a backyard in Boston, MA.
Our client approached us with a vision. They wanted a protected space that would beckon them to enjoy their backyard in almost any season—a spot where they could relax with family, entertain guests, and simply enjoy the landscape of their own backyard. Descriptors like “functional, durable, modern, and protected” surfaced again and again during the first steps of the design process.
But there was one problem: gazebos are best-known for their traditional, almost gaudy appearance. Often laced with eye-catching, decorative features, gazebos aren’t usually described as being modern or minimal.
The challenge was on. Our client was looking for a gazebo unlike any other, and we were eager to bring it to life.

The Design Process: Minimal, Modern & Functional
From the start, the goal was to design something minimal, yet striking. We opted for a white vinyl exterior—a material known for its clean, sleek look that excels in durability. Vinyl was the ideal choice because of its long-lasting properties, low-maintenance requirements, and its ability to withstand intense New England winters.
The hip roof design was chosen for its timeless appeal and effective water drainage, ensuring that the structure could stand up to Boston’s rainfall and snowstorms without issue. The hip roof also enabled us to lean into the minimalist feel our client was seeking, offering a sharp and defined rectangular appearance instead of the more traditional octagon gazebo look.
Unique Features: Custom Vinyl Walls & Screening
One standout feature of the Minimal Gazebo is its custom vinyl walls. Rather than opting for traditional railings, we designed the gazebo with vinyl walls to offer a more private and enclosed space while maintaining the minimal aesthetic. These walls give the gazebo a sense of being more like an outdoor room rather than a typical open-air structure.
The gazebo is also fully screened-in, which adds both functionality and comfort. Whether it’s keeping pesky insects at bay during the summer or providing shelter during a breezy fall evening, the screens allow for maximum use of the space almost year-round.
Built for Comfort: Electrical & Three-season Use
To maximize its functionality, we added electrical wiring, allowing for cozy lighting, ceiling fans, and even a sound system within the structure. We loved how this one addition transformed the space from simply an outdoor structure to a dreamy outdoor living room.
